Texture v Colour in Food Photography  Add/Read Comments

Recently an email conversation with Jeanne highlighted our differing photograph techniques or styles. While I seem to rely on a limited colour palate in each photo and endeavour to empathise the textural qualities of the food being snapped, Jeanne goes for colour every-time.

We did question how this colour-texture thing translates into our individual personas

"LOL - photography styles and personality - there's a thesis waiting to happen! Apparently I'm just a little ray of sunshine - hahahahaha. I have very little in terms of interesting textures or subtle light in my house so I think I've gone for the bright and colourful approach. And I just like colour!"

This photo is an example of 'texture' (check out Jeanne's blog, especially this post for 'colour') and utilises the strong directional light to highlight the slices of this Abel & Cole organic chicken. I'm still not entirely happy with it as the rear leg is a touch dark; but its an improvement on my initial efforts.

I guess we all have our own styles...for me, it depends on the dish a lot; though, I must admit that I do tend to gravitate towards colour :-)

Intresting point -- I think different styles suit different foods. Adding color to your chicken would have taken focus off the chicken on on tomatoes or plate, which not be true to what you are writing, but other times color rules.

A comment about the chicken photo itself, I would crop out the leg entirely, adds nothing and takes away from those luscious slices of chicken

I think you can find a happy middle ground in the photography. I understand what it is you are saying, but getting closer to the food can give you a good shot of the texture too without compromising on color. That's only my opinion mind you lol.

I think it's not bad actually... maybe a warm coloured spot light will help take away the darkness?
