The second night of the trip was spent at the truly superb Grootbos lodge; fully five star treatment in the heart of the Fynbos. The Grootbos Reserve has 1750 hectares of prime conservation land where all non-native vegetation has been removed. It's an award winning foundation supporting local projects from training local women from the Masakhane Township in various crafts projects through to sending students to the Eden Project in the UK.

The powerhouse behind this is the exuberant Michael Lutzeyer. No sooner had we been introduced than he had whisked us off at some speed down to the coast - within minutes British reserve was abandoned as he led us clambering over wave-lashed rocks, splashing in the cool waters of Walker Bay and having us down on all fores tasting water from a fresh-water spring right on the sea front. All this in the few sparse minutes before the sun set. Breathless...
