I'm not really one for ready meals - it's more of a concern of additives and levels of salt and the like rather than a taste issue. That and the fact I fancy myself as a decent cook who only uses fresh ingredients... McCain have released a new range under the Gourmet banner . It’s a range of potato based side dishes such as ‘Mature Cheddar Cheese & Wholegrain Mustard’, ‘Diced Potatoes with Leek, Onions & Parmesan’ and ‘Baby Potatoes with Sundried Tomato & Garlic’. Convenience of course is a great attraction.

I received a set of money off vouchers; so I thought 'why not'. Waitrose only seemed to stock the Cheddar/Mustard version so that was all I could play with. From freezer to plate, via a hot oven, in just 25 minutes.

This is actually the first product I have snuck into the shopping basket that displays the traffic light symbols - these detail levels of fat, saturates, sugar and salt. All came in at yellow (medium) except the sugar which was green (low). It didn't taste too bad to be honest - I might have upped the cheese level a little but the wholegrain mustard had a nice bite. Topped with a couple of slices of Prosciutto Crudo it made for a quick and easy lunch. Yep, I ate the whole 'For Two Servings' 400g carton. Which just goes to demonstrate the other problem with ready meals - the portions are too small.

Brave words - now you'll get all the confessions coming out! I'm a glutton for Tesco Potato Dauphinoise and also their Sesame Prawn Toasts. There, I've said it.

well first and foremost -- i'm in love with your blog AND this dish. i too and HUGE on using almost ONLY fresh ingredients. your photography is absolutely beautiful. you are extremely talented.

happy st. patty's day!

Yorkshire Deli - what a revelation! Mind you those Sesame Prawn Toasts are rather scrummy :-)

Linda - thanks Linda, nice of you to stop by - and I must say that you're not exactly short on the photography talent side of things either!
