Maldon Sea Salt - for Still Life Is...  Add/Read Comments

My entry to this months Still Life With... challenge is a dismal failure. As try as I might I just cannot get the image, specifically the background, to be white (the theme is white on white). No tinkering with the camera (this has white balance set as daylight) or in photoshop can rid the greyness and make it appear white! Very annoying. But as I like the image - the simplicity, the monochrome feel - I thought I would post it anyway.

Sounds like you need a bounce mate. A nice big piece of styrofoam seems to work well, and will send the light back onto the other side of the bowl and help cancel out that shadow... of course i'm no good at it myself, but Lara has a pretty good tutorial on Still Life With all about it... I like the shot anyway... Maldon is the best.

This was natural light coming in from the right with a reflector on the left bouncing a little back on to the bowl. the bowl and salt look OK, it is just the background that refuses to do anything other than be grey.

I tried all combinations of white balance changes and then corrections and adjustments in photoshop - before my head began to swim and frustration forced me to go and do the washing up. :-)

It's this bloody wishy-washy English winter daylight!! :o) Was it raining?!

Grayness aside, I like the photo a lot! Speaking of white on white, I went to see the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition this week - one guy took pictures of snowy owls in the snow - the ultimate white on white - and they are phenomenally beautiful. Go and see it if you have a chance but try to avoid weekends as it's HEAVING then.

I don't know much about photography, but I do like the picture!
