Epiphany Tart  Add/Read Comments

Epiphany Tart
Squeezed 9 different jams into mine - Bramble and Brambly, Apricot, Blackcurrant, the last scrape of Gizella's Plum, Strawberry, Cloudberry, another strawberry, homemade Sloe and some runny quince.

Apparently Victorian housewives used to compete to see who could produce the most complicated designs and greatest number of jams in their Epiphany tarts (perhaps a suitable blog event for next year?). With no visual reference, there is nothing on the web, a simple cross pattern seemed suitable. Homemade pasty too! Just a half teaspoon of each jam filled out the squares, all were filled randomly.

What was even more impressive, feeling the jams appeared as little jewels, I attempted to jag the edge to appear as a crown. It doesn't quite come across that well in the photo but worked for me!

Epiphany is another of those Pagan traditions taken over by the Christians. Epiphany is the 'manifestations' that were initially only celebrated in the Eastern church, but adopted in the West at the same time as the Pagan new year, January 6th.

UPDATE: I should have looked at The Old Foodie; he has posted further details of the Epiphany Tart (including an image) and of the Twelfth Night Cake.

Hello Andrew, I'm not sure how I missed this posting on your blog - your comment on mine alerted me to it. Your tart (with "only" nine jams!) looks great. Lets both plan on making the 13 version next year, and posting our pictures.

What a beautiful tart! Mimi Sheraton has a recipe for it in her lovely book on Christmas Sweets throughout the world and I always wanted to reproduce it (particularly as I buy unusual jars of jam that I never seem to use) but I just didn't get around to it...sigh.
Happy New Year!

That is a beautiful tart!
(PS - I love your comment authentication :) )

Hmm, what a beautiful tart! It's great!

Did you really make that pastry? It looks so perfect!

Also a fine assortment of ingredients inside the tart - all too expensive for my liking ; )

Great recipe, turned out brilliantly.

Expensive? Not at all - all the jams came from the back of the cupboard. And yep I did make the pastry - first time ever!

I love throwing all sorts of fruit into my tarts, this is a great idea and makes good use of all the jam jars in my fridge that are taking up way too much space.

What a great idea for a tart! I imagine that if someone were to enquire about it's contents, you'd have to take a very deep breath before listing all nine ingredients!
