"Mr Brioche" she simpered, "It is a doomed love." The door slammed shut behind her. He tightened the belt on his blueberry jacket, adjusted the angle of his trilby and picked up the rain-sodden brown paper bag. Inside the five thousand dollars she had brought from Mr Big, head of the Yolk Gang. He watched her through the grubby window, wobbling on new heels while holding a newspaper over her coiffured blond hair. Even from three stories up her stocking clad legs were an attraction for any man, even him. Even now. It must be the hen tattoo said to be on her upper left thigh. Few men had seen it; fewer still lived long to boast about it.

He took a long drag on the roll-up and raised his gaze to the cheap dime stores opposite. A shadowed man ducked behind an umbrella. Another, too smartly dressed for this neighbourhood, stood in a doorway. "After me?" he said aloud.

From the corner by the stack of empty cartons came the answer "No, my friend... the eggs".

The words hung in the air as heavy as his slowly exhaled smoke. "They are very late" he said mostly to himself "it is way past the end of the month".

"We will manage," came the raspering reply "my pan is fully loaded".
