DMBLGIT 2006 #1 - The Winners  Add/Read Comments

Just three points separated the winner and the second placed photo in this months round. Sadly nearly all the judges thought the standard of entries this month was pretty poor. DMBLGIT is supposed to be a showcase for the very best in food bloggers photography and you do have to wonder why some images were submitted. Still, I don't want to dissuade anyone from participating in the future but perhaps a look in on the Foodography challenge may impart some tips and improvements to every-ones skills.

I am going to ask Ronald, whose baby DMBLGIT is, to create a winners logo so we have something to display on our blogs if we are lucky enough to win. Anyone up to create a winners logo?

After the fold the winners with scores and comments from the judges. The original list has been updated with the final scores.

Murukulu and Tea - Traditional south Indian snack & tea served south Indian style
Overall Winner: Mahanandi with the excellent Murukulu and Tea. With 125 Points. "Great shot. Love the shapes, the colours and especially the lighting." "Superb lighting but thought too much empty space to top right and not enough at the bottom"

Christmas Apple Compote
2nd Place: Fred Kitchen with 122 points. "Gorgeous. Everything is right - from the clean background to the lighting to the focus to the shapes. Not adventurous but a professional quality food shot. Well done!"

Brie and puff pastry with basil and lime
3rd Place: Nika's Culinaria with 112 points. "Nice composition, crisp focus - maybe a slightly shallower DOF to blur some of the distant puffs?" "nice emphasis on texture and good greens"

Category Champions (not already in top three).

Smoked Salmon Appetizer
Winner Edibility (38 points) Culinary Fool
"Looks tasty, crisp focus but the shot & the composition are a bit been-there-seen that." "A bit dull photography-wise but looks lovely to eat"

Caviar and Champagne
Joint Winner Aesthetics (39 points) Beyond Salmon "Excellent lighting, great focus - you get a feel of the textural contrasts going on here! Great colours too - well done."

Special Siu Mai (with leaping anchovy) on rice
Joint Winner Aesthetics (39 points) Belly Timber "Full marks for interesting food styling!! Good, muted lighting, crisp focus - well done!"

Broadbeans with bacon and sun dried tomatoes
Joint Winner Aesthetics (39 points) Lucullian Delights "Tricky dish to photograph well - and you've done it! Good composition and the black plate works very well."

Chilli Sherry
Winner Originality (46 points) The Laughing Gastronome "Very original angle and focusing is pretty spot on under difficult conditions. Love the interesting effect of the bottle neck acting as a reflective tunnel" "Very unusual shot and very visually appealing, if a little scary" "trippy, but not edible"

Congratulations to the winners!!!

This photo was taken in our usual dining area without any extra setup or lighting arrangements. It was late afternoon, sunset time and the sunlight beautifully reflected in the background. The empty space in the picture made muruku look better, in my view.

Anyway, Glad to be the overall winner in this contest and congratulations to all other winners and participants. Thanks to all judges and to you, Andrew for taking the initiative and hosting this event.

Hey! Cool! Thanks, judges!

Though I have to confess, "muted lighting" = "Oh crap, the sun went behind a cloud again." :-)

I am surprised and simply honored to have made it into the top three. I appreciate the hard work of the judges to put together the thoughtful critiques.

You all have made my day! :-)

Thanks also to everyone who has stopped by my blog and had such wonderful things to say. Blogging and photography are so intensely solipsistic (esp. food photography, just me, the food, and alot of hot lights etc), it is nice to feel a connection to you all, so your comments are always very important to me.

I just can't believe this!! Wow, I'm really really happy! I just wanted to participate for the fun of it! Thanks Andrew for all the work you put into this and for starting it up again and thanks to the judges!

Congratulations to all the winners! :)

Congratulations to all who entered, as well as all the winners.

Maybe I misread this but I must say that I find the following comment somewhat disturbing and demeaning.

Sadly nearly all the judges thought the standard of entries this month was pretty poor. DMBLGIT is supposed to be a showcase for the very best in food bloggers photography and you do have to wonder why some images were submitted.

I just looked through the 47 entries and while I don't necessarily love each and every image, I can't quite see how one make a blanket statement like that. Not to mention that it may put a rather sour note on the winning entries. I know that if I had entered and won, I would be inclined to say something like "Thank you very much for finding that my photo was the least of all the evils".

Perhaps the exact rules for entry into DMBLGIT should be reiterated with each announcement. There are many new food bloggers who may not know exactly what is required.

Congratulations to the winners! Well done everyone...

This is very exciting - thanks so much for organising and judging! Looking forward to the next one!

Congratulations to all the winners!

Congratulations to all the participants.

Congratulations to the winners. Thanks for hosting Andrew.

Thanks to all for taking part and to those who left comments - I love hosting DMBLGIT! There were some wonderful images submitted this time, but those I was gunning for, didn't quite make it. Better luck next month food-snappers!

Sorry I'm late to thank you all very much for your vote ! I'm so honored to be in the 2d place !! Thanks you sooo much.
