Having never maintained a food diary I thought it would be an interesting exercise and took her up on the challenge - a record of the dietary intake over the week. Nothing special was planned for the week - no restaurant outings, no gathering of friends, no dinner parties...
Monday:
1 small orange juice, 1 coffee semi-skimmed milk, 1/2 tsp sugar. Visit to mums - 1 coffee SS1/2tsp, 2 small homemade jam tarts. Visit to sister - 1 Chinese takeaway (the first in at least 8 months) 5 sweet and sour chicken balls, 1/2 tub special fried rice, 1/2 tub fried chili beef, several prawn crackers. 4 cheese biscuits each with a slither of Brie. 2/3 bottle Beaujolais Villages wine. 1/2 cup coffee SS1/2. 2 squares Lindt dark 85% chocolate.
Tuesday:
1 multi-seed bagel and spread. 1 orange juice. On the road - 1 ready made chicken salad sandwich, Innocent Mango and Passion Fruit fruit smoothie, 1 slice Carrot cake. Later 1 coffee SS1/2tsp. Dinner - Pilles' Red Peppers with Cumin-scented Halloumi Cubes plus salad. 1/2 bottle Viognier. 1 large slice of homemade Cranberry and Almond Flapjack. 1 large class of coconut rum.. another glass of coconut rum... a third.
Wednesday:
1 coffee SS1/2tsp, 1 bowl cereal with SS, another cup of coffee. 1 iced bun, 1 slice apricot sponge cake. 1 bowl of (horrid) cheese filled frozen pasta 'shapes' with a homemade tomato sauce. 1 slice of flapjack. 1 pint London Pride. Later 1 coffee FF1/2tsp. 1 prawn and mayo sandwich. 1 slice of ginger cake. 1 glass OJ.
Thursday:
1 cup of coffee SS1/2tsp, 1 cup of regular Café Uno Americano with cold milk 1tsp sugar, 1 bowl cereal. Salad leaves topped with three slices pama ham, half a dozen new potatoes and a dressing made of unset quince jelly (what a disaster that was, but at least I have found a use for it), olive oil and balsamic. 2 slices flapjack. 1 cup of coffee SS1/2tsp. 1 slice ginger cake. 1 bottle of crappy white. 2 small ham and pickle sandwiches, 3 grapes.
Friday:
1 cup of coffee SS1/2tsp 1 bowl cereal. Pork Stroganoff with Leeks and some small black potatoes (actually dark red). Half bottle Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Last slice of flapjack. Three Choco Leibniz biscuits. 1 Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Nut Bar. Bowl of fresh pineapple.
Saturday:
1 cup coffee SS1/2tsp, 2 slices of toast with marmalade. 3 slices granary bread with Vegemite, 1 choco leibniz biscuit. Chicken and Leek Risotto, 4 choco leibniz biscuits 1 cup coffee SS1/2tsp. 1 toasted cheese and ham sandwich, a few crackers and cheese, 1 very large glass Chilean Merlot, 1 glass LBV port.
Sunday:
1 coffee FF1/2 tsp. 1 bowl cereal with SS. Sardines on toast and a little salad. 2 Bloody large slices of Pilles' Cheesecake. 1 pint Loddon Brewery Bitter. 1 coffee SS1/2tsp.
Distinctly lacking in fresh fruit! Certainly not five a day. Although the cereal contains almonds, raisins, cranberries and blueberries. Too much cake?
Now this post is complete, Sam has put out a proper request for coverage of all things consumed over the coming week - but in photos. Oh grief... Here we go then!

I had to laugh at the way you counted your 5 a day which is exactly the way i count my 5 a day.
Does 5 pieces of grapes count as 5 fruit a day? *laughs*
Looking forward to your photo diary!

vegemite? VEGEMITE????? what kind of Brit are you, Andrew???
Weightwatchers, if you subscribe to their online tracking system, has reminders about eating 5 fruit and veg, 3 dairy, 5 x 8oz glasses water. They have just launched a new system that includes oil requirements too.
To me, this is the part of Weightwatchers I would like to address, even when I am not dieting. If I am not dieting, you can be absolutely sure that I will not eat enough fruit/veg or dairy, or drink enough water and I will probably have too much oil.
It's a great thing to get in to the habit of self-assessing.
thanks andrew - look forward to the photographic version - I am jealous of the amount of cake you eat!!!

Sorry about the vegimite - in my defense I did spend awhile living in Australia. As for the cake addiction - its all down to blogs if people didn't keep blogging about bloody cake I wouldn't have to go and make any. And then I wouldnt have to eat it. The Choco Leibniz buscuits are harder to explain away...

i thought I was being kind by not mentioning those.
They are irresistable.
It is completely understandable.

I don't think I'd ever want to start that sort of food diary. I'd be horrified at seeing on paper, how much I actually eat.
By the way, I'm a Choco Leibniz fiend myself. Once the plastic on the packet is torn, there's no turning back .. hard to stop at one biscuit per cup of tea too.

I must admit Y the amount of 'cake' in the list looks a bit horrifying.

Andrew, as I work in a kitchen, I would personally call that "research".

Research! :-) I must remember that!
